I recently went to a contemplative service at church that was hushed, holy, and spoke deeply to my heart. At the end of the service they gave us cards with a beautiful scripture and quotes. This one made my heart skip a beat:
"You have immense potential to love, to care, to create, to grow, to sacrifice, if you believe in yourself. It doesn't matter your age, or your color, or whether your parents loved you or not. Let that go, it belongs in the past; you belong to the now. It doesn't matter what you've been, the wrong you've done, the mistakes you made, the people you've hurt. You are forgiven. You're OK. Give yourself a new birth. Begin now. Today."
In Italian, the literal translation of "to give birth" — "dare alla luce" — is: "to give to the light." We have been given to the light (Eph. 5:8). Jesus came to bring light to the world (John 8:12).
But here's my question:
Do we live like we believe it?
Sometimes I think we hear about God's forgiveness so often we sort of...dare I say it...gloss over it. We know we've been forgiven, that grace abounds in deepest waters, and that God is good all the time...but we still haul around heaps of junk: the grudges, the unforgiveness, the guilt, the shame, the wounds, the heartbreak, the generational patterns...all of it. We carry it so long we don't even recognize the weight anymore. Maybe we even sigh with resignation, claiming that it's just our burden to bear.
In those moments, we may have forgotten our birthright that Christ bought for us, but nothing has changed: we are still children of the light. Our duty in life is not to sigh with resignation, but instead, to remember who we are - Whose we are - and to come back to the Light.
There's a reason God specifically says he gives us new mercies every morning (Lamentations 3:22). We need the gentle reminder that if God - the one who created everything seen and unseen - generously and freely gives us each new mercies every single morning, then we can certainly give that to ourselves, too.
You are forgiven. You're okay.
So give yourself a new birth. Begin now. Today.
You can because He's already given it to us. Let's live like we believe it.
